How to live economically and make the most out of your stay in UK? The answers have been clubbed under different headings:
Mobile Phones: If you are looking to buy a mobile, go for a “Contract” scheme rather than a “Pay as you Go” scheme. You will get certain amount of free minutes every month when you go for a contract scheme and the mobile will be yours for “free” at the end of the contract period.
Phone Cards: When using phone cards to call India, use a BT or NTL landline and not BT pay phone booths. BT phone booths work out to be very expensive. If you do not have access to a BT or NTL landline, use the land line at the shop from where you bought the telephone calling card.
Telephone: The largest telephone company in the UK is British Telecom (BT). Public BT payphones accept coins to the value of 20p, 50p, 1 pound and 2 pounds respectively. It is cheaper to make telephone calls between the hours of 6.00 pm and 8.00 pm,Mondays to Fridays, or at all times on Saturday and Sunday.
Television: You may wish to buy or rent your own television. There are five main channels, BBC1 and 2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, with local programmes available on Channel 6, in some areas of Southampton. Satellite television is also available at an extra cost. It is compulsory to buy a license if you buy or rent a television, whether you live in privately rented or college accommodation. Licenses cost 116 pounds per year for coloured television and 38.50 for black and white televisions, and can be bought at Post Offices. Using television receiving equipment to receive or record broadcast television programmes without the correct licence is a criminal offence. You could therefore face prosecution and a fine up to 1,000 pounds.
Electricity: British electricity works on 230 volts / 50 cycles and most sockets take 13 amp square pin fused plugs.
Groceries: If you are cost conscious, buy your stuff from ASDA or TESCO as they are the cheapest around, much cheaper than your neighborhood corner shop.
Travel within UK: Rail and coach cards can be obtained from rail and coach ticket offices. Rail cards cost 18 pounds per year and the coach cards are for 9 pounds per year. They enable you to save between 20 - 30 percent on many normal adult fares but check conditions before purchasing. International Student Identity Cards (ISIC) can also be purchased at a cost of 7 pounds. This card enables you to get reduced fares plus a variety of student discounts when you travel abroad.
National Insurance (NI) Number: As soon as you have landed your first part-time job, apply for the NI number at the DSA office. To get your NI card may take almost 2 – 3 months time. NI card helps specially when you want to leave your present part time job and want to take up another job. Having an NI number and a valid UK Driving License helps if a prospective employer wants to hire you on a work-permit. For details visit: www.dwp.gov.uk
NHS: Any international student who is on a course extending over 6 months is entitled to the free National Health Service. One of the first things that you should do is to get your NHS card in UK. For details visit: www.nhs.uk
Bank Account: Barclays Bank will be visiting WMC preferably in the first week of course commencement to help open bank accounts for overseas students. You should have the following documents in your possession prior to opening a bank account with Barclays: A valid passport; A bank statement for your account in your home country which is less than three months old (or a utility bill which is less than three months old); Documentation to confirm your home addresses in the past three years; Documentation to confirm your present UK address (e.g. utility bill, rental receipts)
Shopping: Most shops are open between 9.00 am and 5.30 pm Monday - Saturday, until 9.00 pm on Thursdays for 'late night' shopping and some are open on Sundays between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm. Supermarkets are usually open until 8.00 pm but some stores are open for 24 hours a day from Monday to Saturday. The best bargains are available from stores just after the New Year i.e. the week extending from 4th to 11th January. You might get discounts up to 70% off.
How should I carry the funds available with me to Southampton?
For the balance of the tuition fees, apart from the upfront deposit paid, make a demand draft in the name of the college i. e. WARSASH MARITIME ACADEMY, prior to leaving from India. The college will send you a letter, four weeks prior to the starting of the course regarding the balance fees to be paid at the time of enrollment at the college.
Carry about 1200 - 1500 GBP in the form of travellers cheques to pay for your first months room rent, deposit to the landlord and your other expenses as the bank opening process may take anything from 2 - 4 weeks (it is rather unpredictable). Once your account is opened up with a bank in Southampton, you can encash your TC's and have them deposited into your account.
The balance of your money for your living expenses can be carried in the form of a Demand Draft in favour of yourself. You may have the draft credited into your account once your account is open with the bank.

It is better to call up the college and inform beforehand your date of arrival if you are going to stay within the college campus. You should immediately start looking for an accommodation by contacting the local agents or looking up the advertisement in Daily Echo newspaper.
