As   an   Engineering  Graduate  (non-mechanical branch),  you
have  two ways  to  join  the  Merchant Navy. Either you can join
the  Deck / Navigation  Department  or  you  can join the Engine
department. It  is  expected   that   having  studied  a  four  year
Engineering  course, an Engineer will usually opt for the Engine
department of a Merchant Ship.

If   you   want   to  join  the  Deck / Navigation  department  of  a
Merchant  Ship and rise to the rank of a Captain, the procedure
for  you  wll be same as that of a student who has passed Class
XII  PCM  and  join  as  a  Deck  Cadet  after  doing the Pre-Sea
course.

If you do not hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering, but hold
a  degree  in  some  other stream for e.g. Electrical, Electronics,
Automobile, Production, etc.,  you  may  still  join  the  Merchant
Navy  in  the  egine department and rise to the ranks of a Chief
Engineer. The  Chief Engineer is the highest rank in the engine
department  of  a  Merchant  Ship. The  procedure for the same
has  been  outlined  below  but  the  main  difference  is that the
student  has  to  arrange  for  his  own  placement on board
Merchant  Ship
. If  you  have  any  of  your relations working at
senior  ranks in the Merchant Navy, it may be of help, otherwise
it   is   not   very   easy   for   students   from  other  engineering
streams  to get placement as an Engine Cadet / Trainee Marine
Engineer  on  board  Merchant Ships. You will need sea service
time  as  an Engine Cadet / Trainee Marine Engineer to be able
to  give  your Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) Certificate
of  Competency  (COC)  examination  in  the   UK   at   Warsash
Maritime  Academy,  Southampton, UK. After clearing this exam,
you  will  be  able  to sail  in  the rank of an independent watch-
keeping   engineer   officer   on  board  Merchant  Ships  in  the
engine department.

The  following  is the procedure for GRADUATE ENGINEERS (4
YEARS DEGREE)  to  join  Merchant   Navy.  This   is   also  the
shortest  route  available  for Grauduate Engineers to give their
Certificate  of  Competency  (COC) examinations and become a
Marine Engineer Officer on Merchant Ships.
